DESBOROUGH SAILING CLUB

NEWSLETTER

June 2010    No. 55

Notes from the Commodore…

Monday evenings training with our Senior Instructor Spencer Needs. All welcome to join the Monday regulars. No cost for instruction, Club boats for hire at the usual rates. RYA standard instruction with safety boat cover informal atmosphere, fashionable pink tops are welcome but not essential wear. (See photo on page 3.)

Wednesday evenings racing start 19.30, make that early midweek break from work and be on the water with up to 16 other boats for the best attended series at the Club. Until this Wednesday David Hampshire was second in both trophy and handicap events, well done David.  A good sail and a beer shared with friends is just what doctor ordered (or needs) to get through the week.

Friday evenings.  On-Board training for Ashford scouts led by our Rear Commodore Dave Henfrey, has been a real success for the Club gaining RYA recognition and support for introducing young people into sailing and a great end of week evening on the water for so many members who have kindly supported us in so many ways. There is a really good feel on Fridays from the scouts who have enjoyed their sail, their parents and leaders and members who have helped. Thank you to all helpers.

Saturday sailing has included the new ‘Race Coaching’ Course which is aimed at any member who wishes to start racing, improve their racing, or feel more confident in the hurly burly of a race. Several young members have been attending regularly and have improved their starting, upwind and downwind sailing skills and their knowledge of racing rules. Do join us for the last couple of sessions.

I am pleased that Saturday points’ racing has been challenged by two regulars on the racing course, Joshua Dalton currently 4th and Nicholas Pepall 9th with three races to go.

Ladies Vase leader after one race Heather Kane.

Sunday Club Day has been busy with good numbers entering the racing.

Please check your website www.desboroughsc.org for weekly updates of results.

It is great to see so many different names at the top at this early stage.

All these trophies are still open to challenge with plenty of races still to go.

DSC Open Day. It has been a marvellous sunny breezy day to welcome so many visitors to our Club. A very big thank you to all members who helped welcome visitors, run the bar, make coffees, organise parking, and sail with visitors. I know several visitors have joined as members and we look forward to helping you enjoy the Club.

The Commodore’s Decanter race held on the Open Day for best boat with a visitor as helm or crew was won by Paul Stapleton in his Enterprise with Richard Broughton second in National 12 both crewed by a pair of brothers with a future in sailing. Shepperton Raft Race run by DSC with Nauticalia was a great success with more than forty fantastic rafts on a musical theme. This event is richer through the extraordinary effort put in by Sally Dick as principal organiser, commentator and judge. DSC managed the river aspect and a very big thank you to all of you who helped in so many ways. (See photos on back page).

The Treasure Hunt with Fish & Chip Supper – see Report. Many thanks to Sarah and Mark Pepall for organising this evening.

Neighbours. Please be respectful of our neighbours across the creek with regards noise. We share a lovely environment and wish to continue our longstanding good relations. Please no weekend power tools or noisy equipment before 10:00 or after 18:00 and respect at all times when arriving early or leaving late. Thank you.

Storage. It has been a high priority for the past two years to improve the facilities for storage of increasing amounts of high quality club sailing equipment including sails and engines. Your committee has looked at Containers, a new garage (planning permission obtained), revamping existing sheds but has settled on a new cupboard to be built under the veranda outside the men’s changing room. We have a drawn plan, funding allocated, a builder lined up, and await written approval from our landlord. I hope this project will be completed within eight weeks. It has been a frustrating problem and we are grateful for the patience of our ladies whose changing room has been a temporary sail loft.

There are several cruisers for sale:

Isobels' s 20ft Viking Cruiser "Valhalla"

Mac's 17ft sailing cruiser "Rob Roy"

Tom Balm's 17ft sailing cruiser "Malindi"

So there is now plenty of chance for members to buy one of these tried and tested sailing cruisers and come sailing in the Cruiser Series.  Unfortunately, Isobel's motor cruiser needs to be berthed elsewhere as we are not supposed to have motor cruisers at the club, apart from the one or two owned by very senior (by age!) members.  Not sure of the prices, but if you are interested, then come on down to the club and have a look on the notice board.

Cruisers Are GO!

After a rather frustrating start to the season the Cruiser are definitely GO!

The eight races of the season so far have had an average of over three entries, and seven boats have so far competed.

At present Dewiniaeth is topping the table for the Early Sumner Series, but mainly by dint of having competed in every race, with two firsts, three seconds and a third, so Douglas and Dee have completed the minimum number of races and are now into improving their rating with discards.  Hard on their heels is Lady Bug II with two firsts one second and one third, and Dave is praying for stronger winds.  Blackbird, sailed by our Commodore and his Lady, is coming-up -fast-on-the-rails, with two firsts and a third, and that third was probably the result of a gear failure (that's the trouble with Old Gaffers!).

The handicapping system is now settling down and the finishes are often very close, and the more you sail the more accurate the handicapping system will get - so don't be shy, Cruisers, lets get sailing.

Mike Craker and I took a GP14 (Maggie May) to the Littleton “Pepperpot” 3 hour pursuit race. After a disaster with the rigging, we decided to jury rig the sail and have a go as they say (best of British and all that). Being late to start and not finding out the course until the last minute we did well to finish. Coming a healthy 17 out of 25 (only 22 finished ha ha). We were rewarded with a bottle of wine each for the first visitors to finish (and it went down very nicely). While the locals where complaining of the poor wind, we had to smile for us it was a very good wind compared with what we are used to....

Please, please, please can I remind you all that when you come down to the club, we cannot change £20 notes?  (Unless of course your drinks bill comes to that amount.)  Please try and bring either change or notes of smaller amounts.  Thank you.  Sally

Yes it’s that time of year again for Camp Desborough; this year its the 3rd of July and has a Pirates of the Caribbean theme. Hopefully there will be even more people and even more fun than we had last year.

Please see the poster in the newsletter and send a quick email to me so I can sort out catering.

See ye there me hearties!

Dave Henfrey

This year's” Treasure Hunt" was arranged brilliantly by Mark Pepall.

I can add that The Fish and Chip supper was equally brilliantly arranged by the lovely Sarah Pepall. I am under the impression that Sarah also had a word with Him Above, and arranged the weather brilliantly too.  Such a good evening, except my team didn't win.

DSC Treasure hunt 2010 – Report

More than 70 people turned out in a dozen boats to enjoy warm weather and glorious sunshine on Saturday the 26th of May 2010 – a perfect day for cruising along the river!

All boats set off promptly at 6:30 or so, except for Dave Henfrey’s cruiser, which drifted backwards towards the Warren Lodge while Chris Abell repeatedly tried to restart the engine! Some boats finished in well under an hour (which was reflected in their scores!).

Everyone generally agreed the questions were a little hard (but then, one team put “BROWN” as their first answer to question 1 - I’m not sure anyone  could ever dream up an easier clue!).

The fish ‘n’ chips arrived on time at 8:00, fresh and still hot, followed by Magnum ice creams which went down really well in the warm, sunny evening.

The winners were announced and prizes awarded to 1st and 2nd place (good recovery Chris!). Many stayed on talking and playing pool until 11:00.

The most common proposed clue for OL’ TROUT was “Membership Secretary”!

We are still looking for someone to take over as Editor – please speak to Anna or Richard C.

Spencer's Ladies

Spencer takes an ad hoc class of a Monday evening in the summer, of members who would like to improve their sailing skills in a less formal setting than a proper RYA one week course.  The atmosphere is fantastic, and though one or two gentlemen may also come to this Monday evening class, there is a definite preponderance of lovely laughing ladies, as can be seen in the photo.

Anyone who would like to attend Spencer's Monday night training sessions, is very welcome but you must let him know, however, if you want a Pink T Shirt then that will cost you £15.73.

Sally

The photo shows Spencer's Ladies and their very distinctive new Pink T Shirts which are emblazoned on the front with "I am one of........" and then when they turn around one can read the legend ".......Spencer's Ladies."

May I suggest  that all members should go onto our www.Desboroughsc.org website and click on the "video clip" from the National 12 Open, if able.  This is amazing, and Graham Kean still came 3rd.  So clever, I thought.  Well done, Graham.

The Shepperton Raft Race 2010

A picture of the five young lads from the Desborough Sailing Club, who won First Prize for being the fastest U Sixteen raft.  On it were Nicholas Pepall, Ed Horton, Joshua Dalton, Matthew Renton and Sam Dalton. And there was no bias on the part of the judges, who were Nikki Cowlard, Lynn Lewis and Sally Dick, because they were indeed the fastest

There were also four naughty Nuns from the Sound of Music; amongst them was Mark Lawrence who used to be a member of DSC.  His sisters were known as Sister Y Not, Sister Y Botha, and Sister Y Me.

This is to say a heartfelt thank you to some of the people who made last Saturday evening's Jazz on the River Bank such a success.

Thank you Iris for having booked Chris Houslander and the Panama Cafe Orchestra last year, whilst you were still Social Secretary.

Thank you to Sarah and her myriad helpers for a quite outstanding supper and for organising the whole evening so well, and with the apparent ( ! ) lack of worry and fraughtness, or at least it seemed to go so smoothly, that I would have presumed she had run such evening such as we enjoyed, many times before.  Amazing.

Thank you to Dave for organising the erection and dismantling of the marquee.

Thank you to all of those who came and enjoyed the evening so much, which made all the planning so worthwhile.

Just a lack of thank you's to the weather, which though it didn't rain, it was still jolly cold in comparison with a few weeks earlier.

A wonderful evening, so thank you all so much from Sally
